Whether from Mars, or Venus, look after your planet

pexels-photo-1108572There’s a mantra used to help us take actions that will protect the environment: reduce, reuse, recycle.

In simple terms:
Be a bit smarter about how much stuff you buy. Get enough, not too much.
When you are finished with something, try to use it in a different way.
If you have to dispose of something, take it to somewhere that will recycle it into a new product.

Very effective three steps, and something we can do with little effort. Well worth it to save our planet.

These are lessons for looking after yourself. Think of your mind, body and soul as your planet.

Cut down the takeaway meals, the fancy coffees, the snack bars, the chocolate, the crisps, the alcohol, the fizzy drinks, the list that goes on and on…. Be careful about portion control. Buy a smaller dinner plate. Don’t take on too much mentally. Take up mindfulness to cut down on stress. Remember you only have a set number of hours in the day. Make sure you leave enough time for yourself. If there’s stuff that’s troubling you, try and ditch it. Worrying about the past won’t change it: learn from the past but don’t live in it.

Repeat doing the things you do well. Then tell yourself, and others, how well you have done them. Don’t get complacent, or taken for granted. Master a skill. Be prepared to make mistakes, but learn to laugh them off (to an extent). Practice, practice, practice (but only for as long as you enjoy it). Find someone else to show you how to do things better. Be open to new ideas. Settle for improvement in quality, not necessarily quantity. Build a routine that includes some exercise, even if it is very light, preferably in the open air. Stay connected with family and friends. Live in the present.

Share what you do with others, give of your time, volunteer, provide advice or a shoulder to cry on. Pass on the wealth of knowledge and experience you have. Use your talents for a range of purposes. Try something new. Set yourself challenging, but achievable goals, and then go get them. Be prepared to work hard to achieve what you want. Accept that a “weakness” may just be something you can’t do YET. Be curious. Embrace the opportunities the future may bring.

“Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.” Marie Curie
