Stop Dithering

primate-ape-thinking-mimicI am a master of planning to doing something tomorrow.

It took over two hundred tomorrows between first thinking about starting this blog and putting the first article up.

Strange thing is, if I’m doing something for someone else, it’s often done sooner rather than later. If it’s for myself, it can be on the back burner for absolute ages.

I think I know why.

I’ve always been someone who took comfort in feeling that I had helped others. I seldom put myself first, but you know what? I really don’t mind.

I’m not looking for anything back in return from those I help.

It genuinely gives me a buzz helping where I can.. Whether it’s giving someone a lift to the airport or helping them prepare for a job interview, no task is too big or small to not give me a positive vibe.

I just don’t get the same feeling doing something if it’s purely for my benefit.

I know my late mum was just the same, so maybe that’s something to do with it (more about my mum later, I suspect – just not yet). She put others ahead of herself all the time, and if anyone did something for her she always said “thanks a million” – I can still her dulcet, Dutch tone when she said it.

Giving your time to others freely (that is the key bit) can do wonders for your own self-esteem. It definitely feels good. This can be from full-on volunteering with an organisation or charity, through to popping in with an elderly neighbour just to check they are ok. It’s not amount of time that you give, it’s that you give it willingly.
